St. John’s, NL– Hot on the heels of a three win night at the MusicNL Awards, Newfoundland sibling songbirds, Ennis, announce their Annual Christmas Tour. This year, Maureen and Karen will make 22 stops across the province, with youngest sister (and brand new mom), Teresa, joining in for shows on the Avalon. The tour begins in Stephenville on November 27th.
As in previous years, a portion of the revenue raised at each performance will be donated back into the communities. In 2012 alone, the Ennis Sisters helped raise over $60,000.
“It’s a great feeling knowing we’re helping to make a difference to communities across the Province, especially this time of year,” says Karen. “It’s always amazing to see people come together in the true spirit of Christmas.”
The Ennis Sisters’ 2012 holiday release, It’s Christmas, earned them MusicNL’s 2013 Celtic Group of the Year. The album is a collection of unique traditional Christmas songs and features five originals penned by Maureen and her writing partner, Mark Murphy.
The powerful title track and single, ‘It’s Christmas’, shares a theme of enduring peace, while ‘My First Christmas’ is a heart felt song about spending Christmas for the first time without someone you love. The group channels bygone vocal stylings reminiscent of The Andrews Sisters on ‘Coming Down the Chimney’, and ‘Harbour Lights’ tells a familiar story of how communities come alive when Newfoundlanders living away return home for the holidays. The Ennis Sisters capture the gentle beauty of ‘Mary’s Lullaby’ by Wince Coles, and pay tribute to the great Dermot O’Reilly with their touching rendition of ‘A Children’s Winter’.
Like so many Newfoundlanders, The Ennis Sisters have always celebrated Christmas with music. Nearly 20 years ago, they got their start singing Christmas Eve mass at Sacred Heart Church in their mother’s home town of Cape Broyle. In 1998, the sisters taped a popular CBC Television holiday special and the following year they released their first Christmas CD, ‘Christmas on Ennis Road’.
“We’ll be singing old and new Christmas songs on this tour, with stories and fun recitations as well,” says Maureen. “It’s a family friendly show all around.”
